Assessment for internal insulation
The Freiburg Corn Hall is a monumental, multi-storey, storage building from the early 16th century. While the masonry in the corner and column areas is composed of both sandstone and bricks, in the rest of the walls local Gneiss stone was employed. Due to the planned use of the building as a library the addition of interior insulation was required to meet energy requirements.
As a result of over 100 years of salt ingression, the masonry in some areas exhibited signs of damp that would always tend to deteriorate due to the ever rising levels of moisture. Through use of the tests and analysis conducted important conclusions and guidelines were defined for the selection and planning of the new insulation.
