The “Französisches Gymnasium” (“French Gymnasium”) in Berlin, built in 1974, has various structural deficiencies. ZRS has been commissioned to plan the renovation of the roof areas, which will range from minor strengthening and expansion measures to the partial implementation of the fire protection concept. The aim is to not only address the structural and energy-related issues but also revitalize the existing rooftop terrace and make additional roof areas accessible for future use. The process involves cleaning and reusing parts of the old gravel from the roof areas as well as the existing exposed aggregate concrete slabs.
Different functions are assigned to the various staggered roof areas of the building. Outdoor spaces will be created that improve the urban climate and promote biodiversity through extensive greening and rainwater retention. Future terraces will expand the educational environment, offering new areas for respite and learning, such as “green classrooms”, a greenhouse, garden spaces, or a beekeeping farm. Additional photovoltaic panels will be installed, contributing to renewable electricity generation.
ZRS was also commissioned with a feasibility study for the complete renovation of the building. The first stage, including a participation process, has already been completed, and the second stage is currently ongoing.
