On Site | Pilot Project degewo Klimahaus, Berlin

A new residential building is currently being constructed on Salvador-Allende-Straße in Berlin-Treptow-Köpenick, using hybrid timber construction with a wooden façade and a total of 112 apartments. The project is commissioned by BATEG GmbH (general contractor) for the Berlin housing company degewo. The so-called “degewo Klimahaus” (“degewo Climate House”) is intended as a pilot project to develop new standards and processes for the construction of climate-friendly buildings. Wood forms a significant part of the load-bearing structure and the envelope of the new building, which, with its eight floors, is just below the high-rise limit. The exterior walls are constructed as timber frame elements, and the interior walls are made of solid wood construction. Additionally, a wooden cladding has been applied to three of the facades. The new building meets the ” Effizienzhaus 40 NH” standard and emits less than 24 kg of CO₂ per square meter over a 50-year life cycle.

The eight-storey building, designed by Roedig Schop Architekten (LP 1–4) and weberbrunner (LP 5), includes 1 to 5 room apartments and a commercial unit. The engineers from ZRS are involved in the project’s acoustic planning, and the architects are responsible for the fire protection planning.
