Earth Building Innovation Award Baden-Württemberg | Award winner category commercial buildings

As one of four outstanding earth building projects, the Weleda Logistics Cradle Campus in Schwäbisch Gmünd by Michelgroup was honoured with the Earth Building Innovation Award Baden-Württemberg. ZRS Ingenieure was responsible for the earth building consultancy, including the development of the rammed earth mixture from the local building clay. Minister Nicole Razavi said at the award ceremony on 21 October 2024 at the Reute Monastery in Bad Waldsee: ‘With the Earth Building Innovation Award BW, we are putting the spotlight on the potential of earth as a building material. It is time to rediscover earth building and combine traditional building materials and techniques with today’s expertise. The very different submissions have shown: It is possible to build contemporary houses from earth that are good for people and the climate. The award winners’ use of earth as a building material is as individual as it is exemplary. I hope that these earth building projects will inspire many others.’

The Earth Building Innovation Award BW is presented by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Regional Development and Housing and was awarded for the first time this year. In line with the state’s timber construction initiative, funds were made available for the award in the 2023/2024 double budget in order to raise awareness of earth as a building material and its advantages. The award recognises outstanding buildings, building concepts and pioneering innovations from Baden-Württemberg that make intensive use of earth as a sustainable building material.
