Kick-Off: European Research Project SIRCULAR
The SIRCULAR research project held its kick-off meeting in June. 22 partners from six European countries, including ZRS Architekten, are involved. The research project is part of Horizon Europe and aims to transform the building sector into a circular and sustainable industry. The development of tools and services aims to improve access to information on decarbonisation for non-experts and to simplify the evaluation and development of circularity in buildings for professionals in the building sector. The new technologies and services will be tested across four national clusters: initially in Estonia, and Spain, followed by Germany and Greece. These clusters will engage construction companies, housing companies, universities, and local administrative entities. The overall people-centric approach should prioritise the needs and well-being of people and communities
ZRS will work on the development of a holistic design and renovation strategy for existing office buildings, aiming to achieve zero emission building standard. The use of reused, recycled and/or natural building materials as well as climate resilient design and passive strategies to improve occupant health and comfort without increasing energy demand will be cornerstones of the concept. For demonstration purposes, the holistic design concept will be virtually applied to a university building. The dismantling and reuse potential of the design solutions will be assessed, and a circularity index will be defined to measure achievements.
